Amber Liu of f(x), I think, got sick of waiting for SM to give her new music so she wrote, recorded, and produced her own mixtape and gave it away for free. There are two songs from that mixtape that she apparently made music videos for that I’m assuming she directed. Amber is a very talented girl with much ambition in her music, therefore nothing can really stop her from writing, creating, and sharing her music.
The music video was very well shot. “Closed Doors” is a song about running away from feelings and hiding the truth behind closed doors. The chorus line goes: “Nobody has to know what’s behind these closed doors.” The entirety of the music video shows Amber riding through town but I think it’s supposed to be her running from her emotions because there are shots occasionally to her lying in her bed by herself. She’s curling up in herself to hide from the pain. It’s really well put together and the song is so much more mature from Amber’s last album. Even saying that, Beautiful was an extremely mature sounding album full of powerful messages but this album trumps that by far.
Amber must enjoy running because she’s had two music videos where she is running from something or maybe toward something. “High Hopes” was a beautiful video that used smoke bombs to create stunning imagery. Essentially Amber wakes up in the woods and moves towards some smoke in the trees up ahead. She then finds a cliff and jumps from it to the cool water below. At the beginning of the video, we see shoes washed ashore and have no idea what that refers to but with the video complete, we see Amber walking up the beach with no shoes and the shot of the shoes comes into frame once again. Maybe she was searching for her shoes the whole time. The song is talking about running fast. Moving at a speed that your lungs can’t keep up. It’s possible that Amber searching for her shoes is a metaphor that she needs to keep running.
What did you think of Amber’s comeback music videos? Which was your favorite? I’ll let you guess which is my favorite in the comment section. Thank you for supporting me, but seriously, please give your love and support to Amber. She deserves it and has worked so hard for this. Thank you so much and I’ll see you in my next review.
My Quick Reviews are conglomerates of music video reviews. For instance, if there are several releases in a single day that are all related or somewhat related, I will do a Quick Review segment.
