If there’s been one song that has stuck in my head for such a long period of time, even though it didn’t come out too long ago, and especially coming from a debuting artist, it would be “Remember” by Katie. This tune is addicting, an earworm, and is in English so for all us international fans, this song is perfect because it gives us that Kpop adrenaline while pleasing the side of us that always wants to understand what’s being said in our favorite songs. In case you didn’t know, “Remember” is a song about reminiscing on a past relationship and the excitement that was once or still remains there. We were so automatic But now I’m reminiscing Falling through the cracks It was bound to happen The very first stanza of this song is talking about “remembering” which makes sense because the song is called “Remember”, but more than that, it’s sort of talking about how she didn’t want to remember, but she “[fell] through the crack” which I interpret as she fell victim to her own memories. It’s funny how it lingers But I’m not surprised We were magic Boy, you had me hypnotized As the song continues, she mentions how she isn’t surprised because of how “magic” they were. The last line talks about her being hypnotized but maybe it’s not a bad thing, it may be they were so good together that they were like magicians to each other. They had a sort of control over the other. Under your spell We were lost in a fantasy Chasing those memories It’s like I can taste you Katie continues to use magic as the metaphor here saying that she was “under [his] spell” but then goes on to say that “we were lost in a fantasy” meaning that they had indeed trapped each other in this world of memories. I swear to God I still taste you Taste could be used to describe how she feels about this person. It could be a connection but it also could literally be, she “tastes” him. Either way, whatever the metaphor or literal phrase means, she’s damn sure of it. Remember, I remember
We make love memorable We make love not typical Remember, I remember How many times that we The time and the place that we Remember, I remember I I remember Katie is now fallen completely victim to her memories as she talks about how the two of them “make love memorable/typical”. She then goes on to give us details about the quantity, time and location of their love making through incomplete sentences which very clearly give us all the details of what she is remembering. You left me no decision To point the finger at you You kept on coming back With all your reasons To start out the second verse, it sounds accusational because Katie is sort of blaming the guy and the memories that they experienced together. And when it wasn’t working You always gave me something I was needing Boy, you had me hypnotized In this last verse stanza, she sounds like she was trying to resist but eventually gave in. Then it goes back to her being hypnotized by his magic or spell. Under your spell We were lost in a fantasy Chasing those memories It’s like I can taste you I swear to God I still taste you Remember, I remember We make love memorable We make love not typical Remember, I remember How many times that we The time and the place that we Remember, I remember I I remember [Lyrics from www.genius.com] |
In this section of my website, I will be taking the lyrics of various songs, not necessarily k-pop only, and I will dissect it stanza by stanza. I will analyze each section to determine what the overall theme of the song is as well as some of the deeper, hidden meanings that may be present. I'm not a lyrical professional. I'm not by any means a poetic genius, I just enjoy looking over poetry and digging into the stories and concepts that exist therein.
