Just in case you didn’t already know this, Lee Yoo Jin AKA Fromm is becoming one of my favorite artists. She has versatility and uniqueness. She has an amazing voice and some of the most bone-chillingly beautiful songs. “The Aftermath” featuring Minhyun of Nu’est is one of her most perfect examples of how hauntingly beautiful her style of music can become. My dear, today is so windy It rained again all night long Today is colder than yesterday Are you pulling up your collar as you leave home? To start us off, in a song titled “The Aftermath” which tends to refer to the leftover remnants of a destruction, it sounds like this person, maybe Fromm, is concerned about the lover. The concerns of the weather and the toll they may take on this individual is interesting. My dear, are you checking the rear-view window Touching your rough skin? And what about that, are you still biting a dry loaf of bread When you’re never hungry in the mornings? The concern continues. Each of these stanzas are distancing the speaker from the recipient. The first stanza focused on the weather and the concern could be two people that love each other very much and spend a lot of time together. However, in the second stanza, there is a clear separation of individuals. The two people in this song are not together and have been apart for some time. It is inferred in the line “are you still biting a dry loaf of bread when you’re never hungry in the mornings?” This clearly puts a larger portion of time between the two through the usage of the word “mornings”. We had such a hard time starting And we didn’t last that long But it’s so strange When I close my eyes I still dream of you We had such a hard time starting And we didn’t last that long But it’s so strange When I close my eyes I still dream of you The chorus plays the same words over twice. Maybe it’s trying to emphasize the feeling this person has. It plays off as someone who knows they don’t belong together, but still shows concern for the other person. My dear, it was so rainy last night You must had a restless night Are you busy drinking a cup of coffee Skipping your lunch again? The weather comes back in to play here but the speaker is so concerned about this person, the speaker worries if he or she is busy drinking coffee. Coffee is typically not something that takes time away from people’s lives, so to think that this person is busying themselves with drinking coffee, it must mean the initial person thinks the recipient of this song has more free time. However, why would someone spend time, being busy drinking coffee but skip lunch? We had such a hard time starting
And we didn’t last that long But it’s so strange When I close my eyes I still dream of you We had such a hard time starting And we didn’t last that long But it’s so strange When I close my eyes I still dream of you This song is a lot of chorus and very little variation aside from that. It makes me think that this person is sending the song to the ex lover as a set of concerns but really to let them know that he or she still thinks of the ex lover all the time. Otherwise, the song would have more variety and wouldn’t be so fixated on the “missing you” part. That’s how it is, we all go on living Feeling some kind of emptiness Some kind of emptiness in our heart That’s how it is for all of us, we all go on living Feeling some kind of emptiness Some kind of emptiness in our heart The person may have come to accept that separation is part of life and life goes on. Time stops for no one. Just like us, just like you and me [Lyrics from: www.colorcodedlyrics.com] |
In this section of my website, I will be taking the lyrics of various songs, not necessarily k-pop only, and I will dissect it stanza by stanza. I will analyze each section to determine what the overall theme of the song is as well as some of the deeper, hidden meanings that may be present. I'm not a lyrical professional. I'm not by any means a poetic genius, I just enjoy looking over poetry and digging into the stories and concepts that exist therein.
