Hyun Jin - Around You: lyrical analysis

Hyun Jin is the second member of LOOΠΔ. Initially, the song looks like a childish crush. A girl looking at a boy and wanting to express all her love, but only shyly looking on and then running away. The lyrics all read that way and there's even a version of the music video that matches the lyrics perfectly. But I think that's what BlockBerry Creative wanted to do. I think they initially wanted to steer us in that direction because what I think the song is really about is Hyun Jin following Hee Jin around and wanting to basically be her friend. Hee Jin is the first member so being that second person can be intimidating because you don't know how the first person will act. This is just my interpretation, especially after seeing Chuu's interaction with Yves in “Heart Attack”. I think BlockBerry is creating this tightly knit group and relationship not only with each other but with the fans.

You’ll come again today, without fail
What happens if I see you?
I’m carefully waiting
But I’m not expecting anything

I’m just blankly staring at you then I leave
From far away, I wish you would only look at me

My initial thought for this first stanza is a girl (Hyun Jin) crushing on a boy. “From far away, I wish you would only look at me” sends off images of a girl sitting behind a boy she likes whispering in her head for the boy to turn around; to only look at her.

Hey you, do you know my heart?
These days, I’m like a child every day
Hiding as I look at you
You, are you hearing my words?
I’m still not brave yet
So I’m silently leaving again

Hyun Jin is definitely showing some love for this guy discreetly. She compares herself to a child who hides from fear but wants to say something, but they only come out in her head. “I'm silently leaving again” ends off the chorus, but I do believe there is still hope.

I close my eyes but I still think of you
What do I do now?
Everyone calls me a fool
But I don’t expect anything

She's losing hope now. I may have spoken too soon. “Everyone calls me a fool”. Hyun Jin is receiving ridicule for liking this guy but not being able to say it.

Hiding as I look at you
You, are you hearing my words?
I’m still not brave yet
So I’m silently leaving again

(You should’ve said it) You don’t know
(Can’t lose this) How about me?
I can’t say those common words

This stanza reminds me of a call and response but she's communicating with herself. She creates this argument in her head. She finishes off the stanza by saying “[she] can't say those common words” probably suggesting even things such as “hi” or “hello” she can't get out.

I’m just blankly staring at you then I leave
From far away, I wish you would only look at me

There is a short refrain from the first verse that brings us as the listeners and readers back to where this began.

Hey you, do you know my heart?
These days, I’m like a child
Stealing glances at you and running away
You, are you hearing my words?
I’m still not brave yet
So I’m silently leaving again

In this section of my website, I will be taking the lyrics of various songs, not necessarily k-pop only, and I will dissect it stanza by stanza. I will analyze each section to determine what the overall theme of the song is as well as some of the deeper, hidden meanings that may be present. I'm not a lyrical professional. I'm not by any means a poetic genius, I just enjoy looking over poetry and digging into the stories and concepts that exist therein.
