My Queen is back and with something new apparently. At least that’s the title of her comeback title track. “Something New” is supposed to be Taeyeon’s experimentation into a different genre than she’s ever done before. Whatever it sounds like, I’m sure I’ll like it because it’s Taeyeon. She has a way of making anything she touches turn to gold.
I’m about an hour out, but before I countdown for it, I’d like to appreciate everything Taeyeon has done up to this point from “I” to “Why” to “Rain” and “Fine”. “11:11” was one of my favorites and even though “I Got Love” wasn’t my favorite song from her, “Make Me Love You” got me right back on. It was especially nice to see Taeyeon do a Christmas album. Whatever this new sound is, it will undeniably be Taeyeon.
The music video for “Something New” had a nice aesthetic to it. Many of the scenes were in black and white, while some scenes had a static fuzz. Of course the production value of this video was through the roof because it’s Taeyeon. It’s interesting to see Taeyeon do something as unique as this style.
On to the concept of the video, which was also really interesting. It seemed like Taeyeon was a criminal on the run and facing assassins at every turn. She beat up the guards in the elevator and then had the room service come to her room in the hotel. The room service lady attacked her and tried to kill her. The end of the video I was a little lost on, but it looked like she was ridding herself of money and possessions. Awesome job, Taeyeon!
What I thought was really intriguing was everyone’s guesses at what the concept would be. There was little to go by according to the theories (I don’t watch teasers so I don’t know), but most of the theories I saw were similar to “I”. There was one side of Taeyeon that was in front of the camera and there was another side behind the camera. But did the video take us for a wild ride.
The song was incredible. It started off with a drum beat and then a capella Taeyeon. But when that bass comes in and the rest of the song catches up, it is amazing. Taeyeon never disappoints but honestly, she could release anything and just the sound of her voice would add this touch of gold, this uniqueness that is Taeyeon. She has her own sound that moves with her as she explores genres. That’s what makes Taeyeon such a versatile singer.
The song had a new style and sound but like I mentioned, it is still Taeyeon. Yes, this song was a bit funkier and had a deeper groove than most of the songs she’s put out, but it remains true to Taeyeon’s overall sound. I can’t wait to listen to the rest of the album and hopefully purchase it here pretty soon.
Well, that’s my review of “Something New” by Taeyeon. It’s 2 am here and I need sleep. Thank you for supporting me. Let me know what you thought about the video in the comment section. Thank you and I’ll see you in the next one.
