Taemin of SHINee has released his comeback album just a little bit ago and it has made a serious splash around the k-pop world, being talked about everywhere. And having listened to it several times, I can honestly say this is the best release of 2016 thus far. It presents the sheer element of Taemin while at the same time giving us a fresh look on that idol we have come to love. This album is fresh and so great.
The first track “Drip Drop” has a great energy. The song flows so well and even with the glitchy sounds, it still is really smooth. The energy level in this song is so high and makes anyone listening to it want to dance like Taemin.
The next song is the title track “Press Your Number” with which Taemin worked with Bruno Mars. This track definitely has Bruno Mars written all over it. It has that smooth jazz/funk sound to it and those extended long notes over the chorus with underlying dubs and vocals hidden away beneath. This song is very addicting.
“Soldier” is my personal favorite song from this album. The way it starts out with the deep piano and his vocal layering throughout the entire song along with that strong piano and strings backing him up gives me chills. The extremely filtered out drum set gives it a sort of ominous feelings that I love.
I heard that “Already” was written or produced by SHINee's Jong Hyun. If it was, I can definitely get that vibe from it. It sounds similar to a lot of the songs from Jong Hyun's solo debut album “Base”. The way this song has a slight trap feeling interlined with a vocal ballad is incredible. If I were to choose a second favorite song, this song might win it for those powerful vocal lines in the chorus.
“Guess Who” begins with ominous noises like wind, footsteps, gunshots and a scream. This song feels very much like a Michael Jackson song. It has the funk thing going on with the bass and the slightly muted guitars with a heavy driving beat. However, this song may be my least favorite song on the album. Not that it's a bad song, just out of all of these incredible songs, this song feels very mediocre.
The opening guitar riff in “One by One” at first seemed rather annoying to me, but over time I've actually come to love it. That song repeating over and over in the background and eventually being drowned out by the other sounds makes for a great sound. It gives it that upbeat rock sound throughout the entirety of the song.
“Mystery Lover” rings throughout anyone's ears after hearing that ominous music box introduction. This song is actually really catchy however. The music box, much like the guitar riff in “One by One”, seems to be drowned out. This song gives the feeling of a creepy doll house or something much like that.
I love “Sexuality” not because I'm imagining Taemin's sexuality, but because the driving beat sounds much like an 80s song or like Depeche Mode. The chorus is fantastic in this song and definitely shows what Taemin is capable of.
“Until Today” begins with guitar. This song also gives off the ability that Taemin has. It's heavily driven by the beat and the backing vocals. The R&B feeling suits Taemin and he is able to do it well.
The final song on the album is “Hypnosis” and as it should, it is a ballad. A piano ballad with powerful vocals and emotional expression is exactly what this album needed to finish it off. The song continues to build throughout the entirety of it. I feel like this song was given the most emotion. It bleeds right through my speakers and into my ears, that emotion.
Thanks you for reading my album review of Taemin's newest comeback “Press It”. I tried to keep it a short and simple track by track. Did you enjoy this album? Is it the best of the year so far? What is your favorite song and why?
