For those of you who are new to this game, Luna is one of four members, formerly five members, of the girl group under SM Entertainment called f(x). They debuted back in 2009 and have had four full length albums. They are completely underrated but not by the fans. No, the fans would never let f(x) down but the company they are contracted under sees things a little different. Many of the members have conflicting schedules that prevent the girls from getting together and making new music. Maybe it’s f(x) as a whole that is letting themselves down. We know for a fact that Luna and Amber still long to create music. In fact, Amber just released her mixtape on Soundcloud not too long ago. Now we get part two of Luna’s solo musical career.
Some elements of the video that added an interesting effect were first and foremost, the fog on the floor of her apartment. Fog creates a dreamlike effect that makes Luna unsure if she’s conscious or deep in sleep. There are scenes that show her floor with and without fog to possibly represent her confusion about where she is. I’m almost positive she is in a dream throughout the entire video.
A point that is made through the whole video is that this apartment she is living in doesn’t have any walls or it appears to have no walls. There is one definite wall structure in her apartment which is where her window resides, but the only time we really see the window as being affixed to a wall is in the zoomed in shots of her in bed with flashes of light coming in through said window.
The video is called “Night Reminiscin’” so it obviously gives off the message that she is remembering something important but we never see or know what it is she’s looking back on. There are clues, I believe but never a definite answer. For example, she’s staring at the glass of water longingly. When she’s leaving her bed, she stops and turns to the direction she came from as if she saw something from her past. These clues help me understand what is going on. It’s unclear, sort of how dreams tend to be unclear.
The tone of the song seems to me to be a Call and Response meaning that whenever Luna sings something into the track, someone who is not present in the video, responds in a way. I think not featuring the male singer in the video was intentional to give the illusion of reaching out for something that is not there. Luna spends the entire video, in a dreamlike state, calling out to a past lover who is not there. But maybe in her head, she hears his voice call back and match her words. I like this idea of back and forth created in a situation where there is only one individual. It could be a romance gone too soon, or it could be a woman on the brink of lunacy.
Luna is honestly one of those voices I instantly recognize and every time she sings, I yearn for more from her because each song she sings with the amount of emotion and power she sings, is never enough. It’s a shame that SM feels the need to attach her to a bunch of EDM songs with little need for vocal variation. She deserves more. I’m glad she finally made a comeback, and especially with a ballad because her powerful vocals give me goosebumps every time.
What do you think? What do you think is happening in this video? Is Luna dreaming or awake? What did you think of the video? Let me know all your thoughts in the comment section. Please be sure to give love and support to Luna because she deserves it and I’d love to see her make another comeback quicker this time than last. Thank you so much for all your support and appreciation. I am so grateful for all of you. I’ll see you in my next review.
