Lovelyz is an 8 member girl group under Woollim Entertainment. They are known for their cute concepts and heavily electronic driven music. Lovelyz is the sister group to Infinite and have released their 2nd mini album “A New Trilogy” at the beginning of the second quarter. The album stands up against their previous releases as being a transition into much more mature musical concepts.
On April 21st, Lovelyz revealed their plan to release a seven-track mini album to follow up their most recent release “Lovelinus” from late last year. The title track “Destiny” turned out to be a song about a love triangle and had a much more mature sound. Still electronically driven, the track had some new elements within the backing track that made it stand out from their previous releases.
The title track was preceded by an instrumental song called “Moonrise” that very much had the typical Lovelyz sound, but mimicked the sound and style of “Destiny”, just with more glitchy sound effects and incredibly more electronic. This song, while so short and simple, has an incredible impact on the album as a whole. It introduces the album; tells the listener what is about to take place in these 6 songs to follow. While it's not my favorite instrumental track they've done, it is still a fantastic and amazing one.
The majority of this album has a mature, adult concept behind the instrumentation and the vocal styles chosen. It is an album that has transitioned Lovelyz from an “aegyo” cutesy girl group to a girl group that can compete with the rest of k-pop. However it still has one song that is overly cute which is “Fondant”. The song is not cute in the way the instruments are played throughout the track. Lovelyz has never been about having cute sounding musical backing tracks. The vocals are what makes this song an over-the-top cute song. From the way they spell out Lovelyz to the “shoo-bi-doo-bi-doo-bi-doo” in the pre-chorus, this song is littered with cute vocal effects that leave Lovelyz still hanging on to that “aegyo” style girl group.
I've been talking about how mature this group has become in the past year and how this album is their transition into that category of mature girl groups. If there were one song on this album to present the way this album feels, to me at least, it would be “Bookmark”. It is a sensual ballad that presents so many great and powerful vocal lines such as the “Here I am” in the chorus that leaves me wanting more. I really hope Lovelyz moves more toward this style in the future because this is how I want them to sound; this and “Stranger” and “Goodnight Like Yesterday” are my favorite songs because of how powerful they are as singers.
“1cm” is a song that sticks to their roots without falling victim to the reversal game. What I mean by that is that the song has much of that electronic driven sound, but without having to revert back to their cutesy “aegyo” style. This song is really great and has a good energy. The overall movement of the song is fast paced without feeling over energetic.
The last two songs are kind of blur to me because I usually fall asleep before I reach those songs to be honest. “Dear You” and “Baby Doll” are two wonderful songs. The first is a sort of mid tempo song that once again utilizes the effect Lovelyz has very well. The thing about Lovelyz is if you took away the vocals and just played the instrumental, people all over the world would love it, but because it's fronted by 8 young girls, people shy away from it. The latter of the two, “Baby Doll” has a sort of lullaby sound to it and is very soft and soothing. I'm not 100% on this, but I'm pretty sure it's mainly Jiae, Yein, Sujeong, and Kei singing this song because their voices are more childish sounding. I could be wrong on that though.
Overall, this album is incredible. I wouldn't rate this as my favorite Lovelyz album, but it's probably second place just under “Hi~”. The quality of this album is excellent. It is definitely their transition album from cutesy to more mature concepts. I really hope the next concept they do will be something more mature, not sexy, but mature. I love this album and listen to it all the time. Thanks for reading through this and look out for more album reviews, music video reviews, and more.
