Amber, Krystal, Victoria, and Luna make up the experimental k-pop band, f(x). They were originally a 5 member group, however, Sulli, the fifth member, departed from the group. She still shows her support for all of the members of f(x). The band just released their 4th full length album and their first without Sulli. The album has some bits and pieces of the 70s, 80s and 90s along with the modern alternative style they seem to always possess. Their new album, entitled “4 Walls”, was released a couple of days ago and has since been blowing up the charts. Now I’m going to review this album.
“4 Walls” is the first track and the title track. This song is very reminiscent of the 70s with the soft synths and the simplistic style of the song. This song is good, but I don’t think they should have gone with this one for the title track. There are plenty of other great songs on this album that could’ve been used as the title track. However, I do like this song and it has grown on me more and more every time I listen to it.
The second track is “Glitter”. This song is fun. It’s almost got a retro Nintendo feeling to it near the beginning. This song is almost something that I could see SNSD doing. It’s got that poppy feeling that drives the song. The chorus especially has a very SNSD kind of sound.
“Déjà Vu” is number three on this album. It’s got some crazy synths that kind of remind me of something that Muse would do. The vocal melody is very different from Muse however. This song is heavily driven by the synths and the fast tempo drums. I think this song could have been a better title track, speaking honestly. The overall feeling of this song is happy and colorful.
The next song is “X”. This song has some very low end bass synths buzzing underneath the track. It’s kind of cool sounding. This song definitely feels like an f(x) song. This is the kind of stuff I’m used to them doing. I kind of like that high note that is hit during the verses. It’s crazy high and quite awesome.
“Rude Love” is the next track. The song starts off with some delayed and filtered out piano. Can I also say that their voices are all on point with this album? This song has an EDMish vibe to it. Especially in the chorus with the back and forth beat. The beat continues on into the second verse. This is a heavily EDM influenced song. I can tell by the way it’s built up.
The next song is “Diamond”. It’s kind of interesting to have the song be driven by a repetitive bass synth and drums. The chorus is definitely my favorite part of this song for sure though. The change is so abrupt that it kind of throws you off. It’s easily to tell where most of their influences for this album came from. Several of these tracks kind of copy off of the EDM genre.
Next up is “Traveler” featuring Zico. It’s kind of interesting that this song starts off with Zico rather than the conventional song design of having a rap or a featured artist to appear in the bridge or the last chorus. However, I like it. The way they are playing out the song is more like a song that would be Zico’s song featuring f(x) because he is taking the verses from what it seems and they are covering the chorus.
Next up is my favorite track on the album. It’s “Papi”. This cool crispy synth playing in the beginning grabs your attention right away. This song is just so addictive. If they were going to promote any other song, I feel like they should promote this song. The chorus, the verses, just everything about this song is just fantastic. I really liked the “I kind of like it” in the chorus. It’s super catchy.
“Cash Me Out” is next up. This song also reminds me of old f(x). It’s just got that style that is f(x). It’s strange and that’s what makes f(x) such a great band. I love the build-up to the chorus, but I’m not the biggest fan of the chorus as a whole. I like the build-up more than the actual chorus. And I love the verses. The flow is just really good in this song.
Finally, we’ve reached the end of the album and this song is called “When I’m Alone”. It has slow swelling synths playing with a synth pad adding a bit of a contrast to the slow, dragging sound of the swell synths. This song has a lot of energy, but it is a slower song. The way the music progresses makes the song have a lot of energy, but at the same time it allows the song to be calm and serene.
This song reminds me of something CHVRCHES would do.
This album is fantastic. For those of you who haven’t listened to it yet, go buy it on iTunes or listen to it on Spotify. I’m sure even YouTube has it now. Just go listen to it. My favorite songs are “Papi”, “When I’m Alone”, “Déjà vu”, and “4 Walls”. What was your favorite song? Why was that one your favorite song? I give this album an 8/10. It’s a great album. I plan on buying it when I have money again.
