I don’t understand why this review took me so long to start, but here I finally am. I love BTOB, but for some reason, maybe I was afraid of being disappointed by this release. It’s happened in the past. But either way, that should prevent me from reviewing a music video. I think honestly with Ilhoon’s solo debut and BTOB’s last couple of releases, I’ve had a bad taste in my mouth since those events.
Well, I’m here to finally face my fear or anxieties and review “Only One for Me” by BTOB. Ever since “Pray (I’ll Be Your Man)”, I’ve had ridiculously high expectations for BTOB but it’s ridiculous of me to compare every release they put out to one song. I’m not that judgmental. I just really loved that song.
Before I jump into the review section about the actual music video, I would like to take some time to note some of the boy group music video archetypes. First of all the whole scenery throughout the video screams boy group; a bunch of men dressed in suits and tuxedos in a hotel and on a pier. Speaking of the pier, several of those shots were ideal for boy group videos such as the golfing from the pier. Then they have those group huddle shots that are iconic in the world of boy Pop music. Lastly, they are on a vehicle nearing the end of the video at night, but they broke the stereotype by being on a float rather than out of the roof of a limo or in the back of a truck.
The video was a bit nonsensical being that it was basically focusing on a bunch of rich boys hanging out and wasting time, which is the overarching plot of most music videos but this one especially had a richness, wealthy, showing-how-much-money-we-have type of video. Like I mentioned, there were about three or four different scenes in the video. A hotel. A pier. Nighttime highway. Not a whole lot of variation but the video has that production value that is known for Kpop videos.
While all of this banter is falling from my mouth, I did enjoy the song and video; probably the song more than the video. The variation on the song was actually quite impressive. There was a bunch of layering and the song sounded like a Ballad at first but then went Tropical/Caribbean with some Soft Rock influences intertwined. It had a lot of different influences that created this song.
However, even though I enjoyed the song, it still wasn’t to the level that “Pray (I’ll Be Your Man)” was and I don’t know if they’ll ever achieve that again, or at least not for a while, but it’s okay to think that BTOB is still making quality music that pleases the audiences and masses that listen to this. I’m not saying I can’t listen to BTOB again without imagining that song, because if you didn’t know BTOB’s Brother Act reached high places on my favorite albums of 2017. I love BTOB. I guess what I’m trying to say is I love epic sounding music and wish they could give me another song like that.
What are your thoughts on the video? Did you enjoy it? I promise I’m not a BTOB hater. I know it’s hard to prove that right now, but I swear. Anyway, thanks for supporting me and keeping up to date with everything I’m doing. I appreciate it. In this section of my website, I will review Kpop music videos, albums, songs, and various other things pertaining to Kpop. This will be the main stage of my website. It is where the majority of the action will take place.
