4Minute is a five-member group under Cube Entertainment that has always found a way to stand out in front of the rest of the k-pop world. They are unique, but still mainstream enough to grab one's attention. With their latest release “Crazy”, they tore us apart every time anyone would watch that music video. So today, 4Minute released their newest music video “Hate” from their 7th mini album, Act 7. We will find out shortly if 4Minute holds themselves up again or tears themselves down.
The music video, after watching it, is very vibrant. The verses are sort of duller, but still have a vibrant feeling to them. They are in a desert during the verses and the browns and yellows of the dirt and sunset seems to really stand out. The chorus portion was in a room painted red and white. During the first couple of choruses, the room is white with red Xs painted on the walls, but then during the last chorus, they are dancing in a red room with the word HATE painted on the walls behind them. The music video isn't anything special and lacks a sort of wow factor that “Crazy”, “Cold Rain” and “Volume Up” had. However, the video was still enjoyable.
Now, the music. What can I say about this song? The song starts off really epic with heavy pianos and it feels much like a mid-tempo ballad which seems to be really popular at the moment. However, when the chorus kicks in, you are spun around in a completely opposite direction. The beat changes to a heavy synth and guitar driven hip hop chorus. The chorus is so separated from the verses that it almost sounds like they should have just made two separate songs. Because the way the verses are building up, it sounds like it's going to be a Lee Hong Ki chorus or a KyuHyun chorus, but instead they are just themselves and go in a completely opposite direction with the song. I don't know how I feel about this song just yet. Let me listen to it a few more times before I tell you how I feel.
