Here I am again for the first time in a while to review an album. This time it's 4Minute's Act 7. This album is composed by Skrillex and therefore has a lot of techno, dubstep, and trap influences. Each song holds its own however and doesn't necessarily need to be seen as part of this album. This album is one that I'm not in love with but I still find myself listening to it all the time. In fact, I just listened to it three and a half times on my commute to school. That's how much I “love” this album. So I guess, let's get started with the first track.
“Hate” is the opposite word I would choose for this song. This song is so catchy and the change from pre-chorus to chorus is abrupt, yes. However, once you understand that it is going to be there, you tend to enjoy it a bit more. I will however agree with MRJKPOP in saying that the chorus is lacking. Gayoon is their best singer and you're not going to have her singing in the chorus, the biggest most hyped portion of the song? I especially love the “wob wob” dubstep things going on in the verses. Those add meat to the song. And I love how well they transitioned from the ballad-like verse to the more intense, dubstep pre-chorus.
The next song, “No Love” gives me a vibe of, I want to say, Crush and Zion T. I'm not 100% on that. I don't know Crush or Zion T well enough to know what songs they've made. However, the entire song aside from the chorus reminds me of that song. This song is probably the most chill song on the album. It really has a relaxed sound to it which calms the nerves and lets one sit in the moment. I especially love the high end synths in the pre-chorus. They add flavor to the song.
“Blind” is by far my favorite song on the album. It feels very dream-like. I think the term is chillstep. The overall feeling of the song is relaxed, but still really heavy. It has a droning bass note going on through the verse, especially when Hyuna raps. Every thing then drops out for the pre-chorus. But my favorite part for sure of this song is the chorus. It's so chill and melodically beautiful. They made a good choice in this song that I think they should have made with “Hate”. Jiyoon is a boss rapper too, by the way. The way they did the last chorus was incredible too. They had Hyuna and Jiyoon singing the main lyrics while Gayoon was ad libbing over the top of the chorus. Awesome! Also the end of this song made me think of “Dark Panda” by Zico, Paloalto, and Hyorin. The way that song transitions to that weird after song part. I thought this song would do the same thing.
The final song is “Canvas” and this is a song that everyone has been crazy over. This song hits hard and doesn't really let up. It has a dirty club vibe to it. The chorus is awesome as well in this song. I think I like the chorus better in this song however, the post-chorus is a bit annoying. That same phrase being played over and over again in your ear can drive a man crazy. Not to mention they play that part over and over in the song. That's the only thing keeping me from loving this song more than “Blind”.
Hope you liked my review of 4Minute's Act 7. Overall it was a pretty great album and I plan on listening to it a lot more in the future. I would give this album a 8.5 out of 10. What was your favorite song on the album? What was your least favorite? Tell me in the comment section. Thanks for reading and putting up with my crap.
