Pinocchio is a 2014 Korean drama aired on SBS from November 12, 2014 to January 15, 2015. The show contained 20 episodes of about an hour each. The plot of this drama is about a family that is torn apart when a reporter, Sung Cha Ok, reported the family’s father and husband to have run away after the incident of a chemical fire in a waste factory. He was accused of running away rather than facing the charges. This lie caused the brother to disappear and the mother and younger brother to commit suicide. However, years later, Ki Ha Myung survived and was adopted by a grandfather who thought his son had come back after being dead for 40 years. Ki Ha Myung took on the identity of Choi Dal Po. On the other side, Choi In Ha, the daughter of Reporter Sung Cha Ok and a victim of the Pinocchio syndrome; a syndrome that causes a person to hiccup whenever they lie. She is an aspiring reporter, but moves out after her father and mother get a divorce. Mr. Choi and In Ha live with Choi Dal Po and the grandfather. Dal Po finds out that In Ha’s mother is the reporter that destroyed his family and therefore holds a grudge against In Ha and her mother. Choi Dal Po and Choi In Ha go through the training program to become reporters at opposing stations, YGN and MSC. Soon after joining the teams, the case from 13 years earlier comes back to life. The case that surrounds Choi Dal Po and haunts him forever. Meanwhile, Ki Jae Myung, Choi Dal Po’s brother commits three murders and finds himself feeling guiltier each day. The case opens up and tries to find the guilty men that are responsible for the death of Ki Ho Sang, however, because of the murders, they can’t find them. The cell phone of the responsible person is tracked and found to have made contact with Choi Dal Po’s brother. Choi Dal Po eventually reveals himself as Ki Ha Myung, Jae Myung’s little brother and tells his Hyung to turn himself into the police. He refuses to but after seeing that Dal Po wants to give the revenge to Sung Cha Ok as much as he does, he agrees. Ki Jae Myung agrees to an interview with Sung Cha Ok and confesses to murdering three people on MSC News. He then tells the world to tune into YGN News to find out the rest of the story.
I thought that was quite clever. Reporter Sung Cha Ok, Park Ro Sa, Ki Ha Myung, and Choi In Ha struggle for the next several episodes in holding positions over one another. Later, an unknown person walks into YGN Newsroom and tries to attack Ki Ha Myung, when he fails, he then goes to MSC News and attacks Choi In Ha and Sung Cha Ok. The boy is put away in jail and the truth comes out that Park Ro Sa, fellow reporter Seo Bum Jo’s mother, was behind the attack as a warning to MSC News to not report anything about her connection behind the lies in the news for the past 14 years. Sung Cha Ok decides to leave her work and takes the fall as a whistleblower for her own company, MSC. After she hands over vital information to Ki Ha Myung, she asks him to get a friend of theirs, Ahn Chan Soo, to file a suit of defamation against Sung Cha Ok. This gets Reporter Sung in front of the microphone after having her position taken away from her. She tells the truth about shifting the focus from the purpose behind the fire 14 years ago to Fireman Ki Ho Sang. Park Ro Sa eventually gets put in jail after her son lies in telling that he is the one that sent the killer after Choi In Ha, Ki Ha Myung, and Reporter Sung. Having her son in jail drives Park Ro Sa mad and she confesses to everything. The show ends a year later with everyone in higher positions and with Choi In Ha and Ki Ha Myung shopping for their wedding clothes.
This drama was fantastic. Unlike many dramas, it kept me watching and wanting to watch more, even at 3 am. The storyline in this drama was well thought out and overall just brilliant. However, I am disappointed in one thing at the very end. Yoon Yu Rae, a fellow reporter of Ki Ha Myung seems to think that their Captain likes her, but she’s unsure. I don’t know if it actually explains what happens to them. I may have missed it, but that last connection we see them have is when Yoon Yu Rae gets drunk after getting yelled at by her Captain. She drinks too much and it is revealed that the captain was bringing her into the newsroom to sleep. That doesn’t really answer my question of do they end up together. In the end, it shows Yoon Yu Rae fixing her hairband, a trait of Nosy Jang, a rebellious reporter. However, overall I have to give this drama a 9.25/10 for creativity, style, cast, and intrigue.
Each individual category will be ranked as follows:
